Despite a relatively quiet buildup to the championship clash, Hardman emerged as a pivotal figure, securing three critical passes for 57 yards, including the game-winning touchdown against the formidable San Francisco 49ers.
His decisive contribution helped the Chiefs clinch their second consecutive title, solidifying their status as gridiron juggernauts.
Reflecting on his momentous performance, Hardman revealed intriguing insights during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel. Recounting the pivotal play, Hardman disclosed that the initial plan had featured running back Jerick McKinnon as the primary target.
However, when 49ers’ defensive end Nick Bosa disrupted this strategy, Hardman seized the opportunity, stealthily maneuvering to the boundary where he caught the attention of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had previously explained that the pivotal play is called “Tom and Jerry.
Similar to the successful “corn dog” call in Super Bowl 57, “Tom and Jerry” aimed to outwit the San Francisco 49ers’ defense in man coverage.
During the execution, quarterback Mahomes audibly signaled the play, prompting wide receiver Hardman to feign towards Mahomes before capitalizing on the defense’s attention to Travis Kelce.
Exploiting the gap in coverage, Hardman glided into the end zone without encountering any resistance.
“Pat never tell me which one he was [Tom or Jerry],” Hardman told Kimmel.
