There’s no mercy rule in college basketball, but if there was, it would appear in a game like this.

The No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks thrashed the No. 8 North Carolina Tar Heels 88-41 on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16 of the women’s NCAA tournament.

Dawn Staley’s squad will face the winner between No. 4 Indiana and No. 5 Oklahoma in the Sweet 16.

South Carolina came out hot right away and by halftime of their second-round matchup the led 56-19.

The 37-point lead is their second largest margin at the break in the school’s tournament history, per the ABC broadcast.

The Gamecocks had 32 points from bench at the halfway mark, had made eight of 10 three-point buckets and were outrebounding the Tar Heels 24-14.

By the end of the game, freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley notched 20 points and nine rebounds. She led the Gamecocks bench, which scored a total of 51 points.

Senior center Kamilla Cardoso returned from her one-game suspension for fighting in the SEC championship and led the starting lineup with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spartans were also only 3.5-point underdogs against North Carolina in Charlotte. No. 1 seeds as a four-point favorite or less in the second round were 2-5 all-time going into Saturday, but the Tar Heels had different plans.
