Following Thursday’s session in front of NFL scouts, here are some key insights on Drake Maye, Tez Walker, Cedric Gray, former Carolina receiver Beau Corrales, and other players.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina — On Thursday, North Carolina’s Pro Day featured 15 Tar Heels and six transfer players, and the Koman Practice Complex was packed.
Attending the gathering was quarterback Drake Maye, who was projected as the third overall choice in the most recent CBS mock draft for 2024, representing all 32 NFL teams. Tez Walker and Cedric Gray, two more expected draft picks, participated in certain activities as well.
Drill testing started after player check-ins, which recorded arm and hand lengths, wingspan, weights, and heights. The vertical and broad leaps came after the 40-yard dash. Following the agility test, Maye’s throwing session kicked off position exercises. The individual position drills were followed by the bench press to complete the afternoon.
Representatives from numerous NFL organizations, particularly those looking to select a quarterback in the April 25 draft, were drawn to Maye. Attendees included general managers and head coaches from the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, and Washington Commanders. The Patriots are ranked third in the draft, with the Commanders having the second-best overall pick. Four quarterback coaches and at least six offensive coordinators were in attendance, two of whom were from the Chicago Bears, the team with the top choice.
In attendance to observe Gray go through the individual position workouts were at least five NFL linebacker coaches, representing the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, and Cincinnati Bengals. Gray collaborated with Aaron Curry, the inside linebackers coach for the Steelers, led such workouts. In the 2009 NFL Draft, Curry—a former star player for Wake Forest—was selected fourth overall.
The highlight of UNC’s Pro Day was Maye’s 60-pass throwing session on Thursday, as he did not throw at the NFL Combine earlier this month. Unofficially, he only missed five passes the entire session, showing off his accuracy with the long ball and his off-platform throwing skills. Receiver Tez Walker, early enrollee Jordan Shipp, former Tar Heel Beau Corrales, and Nate McCollum were among the targets of Maye’s passes. Along with two of Maye’s workout partners from the offseason, running backs Omarion Hampton and British Brooks were also considered.
