When Langham was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame for the Class of 2024, he was given one of the greatest accolades in the sport.
Langham’s award was the most significant since the list’s update for the 2022 season. The AL.com list of Alabama’s finest 100 football players was updated to include the 2023 season in its roll call of stars who played at state high schools and colleges.
There is no attempt to determine which Alabama football player is the greatest or most talented among the 100 players on the list. Its goal is to draw attention to the athletes who, as measured by their total number of awards, have had the best careers.
A player’s placement on the 100 Greatest list is decided by adding up all of his accolades and accomplishments, with induction into either the College Football Hall of Fame or the Pro Football Hall of Fame holding the highest weight. Here, what matters are the number and kind of accolades, the kind of broad achievements that will (or have) be mentioned in the opening few lines of a player’s obituary and utilized to to debate his legacy in the sport long after the majority of supporters no longer recall seeing him play.
34 members of the College Football Hall of Fame, 16 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and five players who are members of both are among the 100 players from Alabama’s high schools and universities with the greatest football careers. There are 24 SEC Players of the Year, 8 AFL/NFL MVPs, and 8 Heisman Trophy winners. The 100 players have been chosen as consensus All-Americans 77 times and have been recognized as NFL first-team All-Pro 95 times.
