REPORT: The Duke Blue Devils key player is been suspended for all sports for placing a bet aganist….
There was positive news regarding Duke basketball’s backcourt on Thursday. The team’s top-ranked recruiting class is composed of inside players and wings who will arrive this summer. Tyrese Proctor told the coaching staff he would be staying at Duke for his junior season after starting 59 games in the previous two seasons, according to people with knowledge of his decision. Proctor, a 6-5 point guard from Sydney, Australia, led Duke with 3.7 assists per game and averaged 10.5 points as the Blue Devils finished the season 27-9. He was voted the team’s best defender on Thursday night at the season-ending dinner.
In a 76-64 loss against N.C. State in the NCAA Tournament South Regional final, Proctor missed all nine of his shots and finished his sophomore campaign without a point. In comparison to his freshman season, when he averaged 9.4 points per game, his sophomore scoring average was somewhat higher. Proctor also saw increases in his 3-point percentage (35.2% versus 32%) and overall shooting percentage (42.3% versus 38.1%).
Proctor did so, however, despite a season hampered by injuries. In the first two minutes of Duke’s Dec. 2 loss to Georgia Tech, he sprained his right ankle, which sidelined him until Dec. 30. Also, he was sidelined with a concussion on February 17th, when Duke defeated Florida State 76-67. Proctor will play for Duke the following season, which will contain 6-9 forward Cooper Flagg, the top recruit in the country, the winner of the Gatorade National Player of the Year award, and the likely number one choice in the 2025 NBA Draft. In addition, 6-11 center Patrick Ngongba, 7-2 center Khaman Maluach, 6-6 forward Isaiah Evans, 6-5 forward Kon Knueppel, and 6-4 forward Darren Harris are part of the Blue Devils’ recruiting class.
On Tuesday, 6-9 forward Mark Mitchell, a classmate of Proctor’s, added his name to the NCAA Transfer Portal. Kyle Filipowski, a 7-foot forward who led Duke in scoring and rebounds for two straight seasons, is another outstanding sophomore who is anticipated to declare for the NBA Draft.
Proctor intends to make a comeback, so Duke is waiting on decisions regarding its other two starting guards, Jeremy Roach and Jared McCain. The 6-3 McCain, who made 41.4% of his 3-pointers as a freshman and scored 14.3 points per game, may be selected along with Filipowski in the NBA Draft. McCain is anticipated to be selected in the first round if he decides to turn pro, much like Filipowski. McCain is still compiling data in order to make a choice. Due to COVID-19 period regulations from the NCAA, which exempted the 2020–21 season from counting toward a player’s four-season maximum, Roach, a starter for the Blue Devils the previous three seasons, has one more season of college eligibility. This season, Roach, a senior, started 33 games, scoring an average of 14 points and making 42.9% of his 3-pointers.
