Milwaukee, Wisconsin The Jacksons are leaving a lasting impression right away.
On Monday night, two rookies, Jackson Merrill of the Padres and Jackson Chourio of the Brewers, both 20 years old, created some history.
Chourio recorded two hits, including his third round-tripper of the season, a two-run home run in the second inning. Merrill got three hits, including a game-changing two-run single in the fifth inning that helped the Padres defeat the Brewers 7-3.
Since RBI became a recognized statistic in 1920, Chourio and Merrill became the fourth duo of players 20 years of age or less to have multiple hits and multiple RBIs in the same game.
On August 21, 1965, they joined Red Sox players Tony Conigliaro and Tony Horton; on May 18, 1959, they joined Vada Pinson of the Reds and Ron Fairly of the Dodgers; and on July 16, 1955, they joined Harmon Killebrew of the Washington Senators and Clete Boyer of the Kansas City A’s.
The last time two 20-year-olds, Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres and Juan Soto of the Nationals, had just a few hits in the same game was April 28, 2019.
Chourio, who is now MLB’s youngest player and ranks second overall on MLB Pipeline, is facing the second-youngest player in baseball throughout a string of games (Jackson Holliday of Baltimore) and Merrill, the third-youngest player.
Brewers catcher William Contreras, who made his big league debut with the Braves in 2020 at the young age of 22, remarked, “It’s crazy watching these guys.” “The young guys and Holliday in Baltimore, along with Merrill and the Padres here, are a fantastic talent.” When 20-year-olds compete against 30-year-olds, it’s impressive. It’s both amazing and insane.
Pitcher Joe Musgrove of the Padres gave his young teammate credit for his composure at the plate.
“He has been amazing. Good bat to ball coordination,” Musgrove remarked. In terms of energy, he has just been a huge spark plug for us. He is content to be here, hungry, and youthful. Every day, he contributes a little something, whether it’s on the the clubhouse or on the field.”
Merrill, Pipeline’s No. 12 overall prospect, was likewise praised highly by Padres manager Mike Shildt.
Shildt remarked, “He’s not trying to do too much.” “He’s simply remaining true to himself and allowing his gift to shine. He’s performed admirably.
Chourio took him deep to give the Brewers an early lead and became the youngest rookie since Andruw Jones in 1996 to hit three home runs in his first 13 games. Musgrove showered praise on Chourio.
“A strong athlete. I gave him something a little too hittable, and he’s been really battling with fastballs,” Musgrove remarked. “He’s a tough out even though his swing has some gaps in it. He delivers a forceful bat swing and makes firm contact. Although he is adept at chasing balls out of the zone, he also has a lot of chase ability.
Shildt was impressed with Chourio’s first impression as well.
Shildt remarked, “He looks like a nice player.” Early in the contest, he made a great swipe at a ball. This player appears to be quite dynamic.
