After the Washington Commanders ended months of speculation by selecting Jayden Daniels at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, general manager Adam Peters immediately began working the phones to see what it might cost to trade back into the first round.

The front-office figure was looking to be aggressive in pursuit of finding a premier left tackle.

Unfortunately, either the cost was too great or prospects of interest had gone beforehand.

This was disappointing, but all hope is not lost just yet. Peters will have planned for every eventuality.

Once the time comes to settle down into the war room, he’ll know that the Commanders have a rich bounty of Day 2 assets to find immediate difference-makers and potentially improve depth options at key positions.

Of course, there’s a chance Washington increases its firepower by trading down at some stage.

While that does seem unlikely considering the picks already available, Peters won’t hesitate to pull the trigger if he feels like it’s the best thing for the franchise.

Something that adds an extra layer of intrigue during what promises to be a fascinating second day.

There is a flip side to the coin. Peters has already proven willing to make a trade-up if a prospect of interest is there for the taking.

Nothing got over the line in the first round, but agreements are normally easier to reach when picks get less valuable further down the pecking order.

Regardless of which direction the Commanders choose, they must find an offensive tackle or two and some playmakers for Daniels. Adding another cornerback is a possibility.

Dan Quinn would also welcome another explosive young edge rusher with long-term upside at some stage.
