Now is when the fight for the American League East begins! The New York Yankees and Orioles will play their first-ever four-game series this week when they travel to Baltimore. With the second- and third-best records in the AL, respectively, the Baltimore Orioles are currently one game behind the New York Yankees in the standings (only the Atlanta Braves have a better pace in the National League). We asked four of our MLB experts, who have all spent time with these teams this season, for their opinions on the series and what to anticipate from both teams ahead of the big game.
Yes, for the time being, Jorge Castillo. Though it’s too early to push the Cleveland Guardians to the top, they have the best record. If the Texas Rangers recover as well as they anticipate, they ought to be mentioned in that discussion. For the reigning World Series champions, Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, Josh Sborz, and Josh Jung could all be important players this summer and in the closing games. The Orioles and Yankees have the mantle till then. Alden Gonzalez: Let me just remind everyone that the Rangers are still in the running for the World Series, having won it the previous year despite not having Scherzer or deGrom yet. They are currently 15-14 with a plus-seven run differential. They (along with the Houston Astros, incidentally) are sure to heat up at any time. Now that we get that out of the way, sure. Though talented, the Yankees and Orioles are also entertainers. They currently have a combination that no other team in the AL has.
Buster Olney: Yes, these are the two greatest teams in the AL, especially with the Rangers eagerly anticipating the return of Scherzer and deGrom and the Astros struggling to start the season. Juan Soto of the Yankees and Gunnar Henderson of the Orioles are two players that have the potential to be finalist for the MVP Award. The Royals, who went from 106 losses to postseason contention last season, appear to be the biggest surprise of 2024, but the Orioles are loaded and the Yankees are once again the Yankees. The Guardians, on the other hand, are off to a tremendous start.
Jeff Passan: The Yankees lead the clubhouse in second place, with Baltimore being the best. Their pitching has flourished even in the absence of Gerrit Cole. Thank you for their offense.Despite Aaron Judge’s struggles, the team remains strong, walking at an MLB-best 11.3% walk rate. Indeed, Texas is waiting its turn, the Seattle Mariners are dominating the league, and Cleveland leads the league in record. Others are hiding. But based only on past performance and promise for the future, this series is excellent.
