St. Louis Cardinals

Oliver “Oli” Marmol announced the departure of two key players today another significant issue in the team….

Former Cardinals close is in control after securing a larger role with a new team.
Was there a chance lost for St. Louis by not resigning this player?

Three seasoned relievers were acquired early in the offseason by the St. Louis Cardinals, who were able to cover the gaps left by 2023 in their rotation.

The Cardinals would only get the early signings, despite multiple opportunities for Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak to add more depth and despite worries that Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn wouldn’t be sufficient to help St. Louis recover.

It now appears that the Cardinals lost out on a fantastic chance to add depth by re-signing a previous flamethrower for St. Louis who is having success with a different team.

After switching from a closing role to a starting one this season, right-hander Jordan Hicks is off to a spectacular year with the San Francisco Giants.

In 34 innings thrown with the Giants so far in 2024, Hicks has a 2-1 record, a 1.59 ERA, a 27 to 10 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a.181 batting average against, and a 0.91 WHIP.

Although the Cardinals expressed interest in working with Hicks again this past offseason, they were forced to make do with Ryan Helsley, who has been their close pitcher this season and has performed admirably.
