SAD NEWS: Toronto maple leafs head coach has been fired for……

If Calgary, which appears to be on the verge of dealing Jacob Markström, was willing to move on from either MacKenzie Weegar or Rasmus.

Andersson, I would give a long look to both guys. Weegar is probably the slightly better fit.

He can play the left and right. He’s strong defensively. He’s competitive.

He blocks a ton of shots. He’d help the Leafs in all situations.

He is also 30 and is signed for the next seven seasons.

The cap hit is manageable, though, at $6.25 million and will become more manageable over the latter years of the deal (which Leafs GM Brad.

Treliving signed while still with the Flames) as the cap (presumably) continues to rise.

The top free agent defencemen (i.e. Brady Skjei, Brandon Montour, Matt Roy) are all of a similar age and figure to come with a similar, if not higher, price tag.

The difference, of course, is that those guys won’t cost assets in a trade, like Weegar would.

In other words, the Leafs could simply sign Matt Roy (a little younger, if less proven) instead of paying dollars and assets for Weegar.

Andersson wouldn’t come with the long-term commitment.

He’s signed for only the next two seasons at a modest $4.55 million on the cap and will turn 28 in October.
