Investigators believe Keontae Lewis became disorientated while trying to flee the rapidly spreading fire that broke out the morning of May 13 in the 100 block of 10½ Street.

He was unable to escape. The medical examiner’s office found that the cause of death was smoke inhalation, officials said.

The fire, reported at about 8:30 a.m., destroyed two neighboring houses and displaced 13 people.

The fire marshal’s office said its investigation into the cause of the blaze remains ongoing but it’s not believed to be suspicious.

Roanoke City Public Schools said it has made counseling services available to students and families as the community grieves.

The William Fleming High School community is mourning, officials said.

“We remain committed to providing support for our students, families, and staff who have been impacted by the devastating fires,” school leaders said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to everyone touched by this tragedy.”
