Early this afternoon, Hockey Canada announced its 30-man roster for the nation’s forthcoming selection camp in Oakville, Ontario. At that camp, that field of 26 skaters and four goaltenders will be winnowed down to 20 skaters and three goaltenders. Nate Danielson, whom the Detroit Red Wings selected ninth overall at the 2023 NHL Draft, was among the 30 players chosen for that camp roster, and he will be a near certainty to make the actual roster when the time comes. The Washington Commanders didn’t exactly run out to a hot start against the New York Giants in their 31-19 loss, and they didn’t finish any better. But at the end of the first quarter, the Commanders only trailed 7-3, and while the points stat line is the most important of them all there was at least one that was much more impressive. The Detroit Lions are putting together one of the best seasons in the franchise’s recent history. After 13 weeks of the 2023 season, Detroit sit atop of the NFC North division with a 9-3 record, three wins more than the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. In his Detroit Lions debut, 36-year-old veteran Bruce Irvin delivered the much-needed pass rush the team was seeking heading into Week 13. Irvin recorded a sack, tackle for loss and quarterback hit in the 33-28 Lions victory against the New Orleans Saints. The Michigan Wolverines are officially set to face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff. The two teams will meet in the Rose Bowl with a chance to advance to the National Championship and face the winner of Washington vs. Texas. Despite being the No. 1 seed, it could be argued Michigan still got the toughest draw of opponents with Alabama entering the contest as white-hot SEC Champions. The Phillies announced some news on their coaching staff on Monday afternoon. According to a team press release, they extended manager Rob Thomson through the 2025 season, and hired two assistant hitting coaches, Dustin Lind and Rafael Peña. Lind was the San Francisco Giants’ director of hitting/assistant hitting coach in 2023, and Peña was a minor league hitting coordinator for the Houston Astros in 2023. Lind and Peña will replace former assistant hitting coach Jason Camilli, who the Phillies announced would be not returning for the 2024 season. They’ll work under hitting coach Kevin Long. NEW DELHI: Dubbed as Philly Rob or Topper, Rob Thomson will continue to lead the Philadelphia Phillies as their manager for at least two more seasons, with a one-year contract extension through 2025. Despite initially serving as an interim manager in 2022, Thomson has proven his worth with a 155-118 record since taking over from Joe Girardi.
