It’s possible that Alabama supporters are receiving from Kane Wommack the defensive coordinator they had hoped for in Pete Golding.
The 36-year-old Wommack has a style, purpose, and simplicity that only Jeremy Pruitt and Kirby Smart can match.
The former South Alabama head coach gave Josh Pate of CBS Sports an outline of the Crimson Tide’s defensive scheme going forward in the absence of Nick Saban. Pate was first exposed to the term “vision coverage” by Wommack.

At the University of Mississippi, he and his father Dave were successful in putting this approach into practice. Kane Wommack saw a total of 28 interceptions during his tenure as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss in 2012 and 2013.
In 2013, he helped Cody Prewitt record a team-high six picks, and in 2012, Senquez Golson, Dehendret Collins, and Denzel Nkemdiche each had a team-high three interceptions.
Under Dave Wommack, Golson recorded a team-high ten picks in 2014, one of which was recovered for a touchdown. Ole Miss led the country in interceptions thanks to the father-son defensive tandem of Wommack. Indiana University had the most interceptions (17) among all college football teams in 2020. As the defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack Jaylin Williams and Jamar Johnson were each assigned four picks. Wommack stated, “Coach Saban has been a little more Cover 7, match, quarters, brackets, that style of coverage. That is one of the things you may see that is a little different.”
“Our defense includes some of those components, but we play Cover 3 and play with a more one-high structure, putting the quarterback in the picture. We employ a more visionary defensive strategy. You’ll be more productive as a defense if you can play a more vision-oriented style of defense where you match the quarterback’s eyes and break on the ball.
Alabama is going to match throw patterns under Wommack similar to how Saban did, but more vision-oriented coverage with eyes on the quarterback will be necessary under the new administration.
Wommack urges players to play quickly and confidently by letting their athletic ability do the thinking for them.
When their players displayed their abilities, Ole Miss and Indiana were successful defensively. For the benefit of the Tide, Smart and Pruitt let their athletes shine.
