The NBA season is lengthy and full of highs and lows. Every team goes through highs and lows in relation to expectations during the course of 82 games and more than six months. But as the postseason approaches in April, they want to keep getting better and play their best basketball. The Bucks are, regrettably, struggling at the worst possible moment.

Milwaukee suffered another humiliating loss on Wednesday night, this time against the incredibly inexperienced Memphis Grizzlies, after suffering their worst loss of the season on Tuesday night—a four-point loss at the hands of the Washington Wizards, who had previously won 14 games. Milwaukee’s season-ending record versus Memphis was 0–2.

It appeared as though the Bucks had righted the ship for a moment. They dominated the Oklahoma City Thunder and defeated the Brooklyn Nets on March 21 and 24, please. Then, in the fourth quarter, they led the Los Angeles Lakers—who were without LeBron James—by nineteen points.

They lost four of their subsequent five games after that, when they started to struggle.

Milwaukee lost in extra OT after blowing a huge lead against the Lakers. They then suffered a defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Pelicans. They have only triumphed over the Atlanta Hawks once throughout this time; after that, they have suffered defeats to the Wizards and Grizzlies.

Milwaukee is still in second place in the Eastern Conference with six games left, at 47-29. But their final win-loss percentage of 61.8 percent would be the lowest since Jason Kidd was the head coach from 2016–17.

The good news is that they still lead the Orlando Magic, who are won three straight games, by two games, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are just 4-6 in their last ten games, by 1.5 games.

Milwaukee will play four home games in a row. This offers them one additional opportunity to seal the leaks and halt the sinking. Before concluding the season with two straight road games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Magic, they play the Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Orlando Magic.

That means that five of their remaining six opponents are both in the top five in their respective conferences and will make it to the playoffs. Milwaukee’s final-round schedule will seem like a trial if they had trouble versus the Wizards and Grizzlies.

Though time is not yet running out, there is still some chance to make a difference. Due to an injury, Damian Lillard is battling, and Giannis Antetokounmpo did not play with his typical fervor on Wednesday night.

like a weak hamstring. Who knows how much of the last two weeks they’ll spend on the court. Given how little time their big three—Lillard, Antetokounmpo, and Khris Middleton—have spent on the court this season under Doc Rivers, it presents a problem.

It may be time to accept that the Bucks this season are what they are: a disorganized team consisting of excellent players whose whole is not greater than the sum of their parts. For a club that has both Lillard and Antetokounmpo, that’s a disappointing result, but the Bucks don’t have much time to demonstrate that a different approach is sound. Their ship is currently sinking.
