It wasn’t the killer everyone was used to in the Nick Saban era, but it was good enough.
There was a meltdown in the second half against Georgia (but the Tide won), and it couldn’t come up with a meaningful third down stop in the unforgivable performance against Diego Pavia and Vanderbilt (the Tide lost), but that was about it.
All of the other issues were on the offensive side. With the attack and talent in place on the O, holding a team to 25 points or fewer should be a win every time out, and Alabama did that in 11 of the 13 games.
It allowed fewer than 20 points eight times. There will be more of those this year.
The focus will still be on the offensive side, and that’s because the 2025 Alabama defense will do its job. It’s experienced, deep, and with an outstanding coordinator in Kane Wommack settled in, it’ll look and play like the version everyone is used to.
The Alabama defense shouldn’t average fewer than two sacks per game – it was freakout time in the Saban era if the defense dipped below, say, 2.7 per outing.
There isn’t a Will Anderson or Dallas Turner to attack the quarterback – at least there wasn’t last season – but the defense will give Qua Russaw a shot to crank it up on the outside after making 36 tackles and a sack. He’ll mix in with Jah-Marien Latham – who made 29 tackles with a sack – with a few other young parts in the rotation.
