Star Alabama receiver breaks down Crimson Tide’s quarterback battle

Germie Bernard claimed not to care when Alabama football names a starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
“It really doesn’t matter to me,” the veteran wide receiver told reporters Thursday. “It’s just a matter of fact, it’s just executing. I feel like when each of the QBs are in, we’re able to execute at the level that we need to to win. So I mean, that’s all that matters. The coaches are going to make that decision when the time is right.”
Ty Simpson is the leader in the competition, and has been since spring practice ended according to Alabama’s coaches. The redshirt junior served as Jalen Milroe’s primary backup for the past two seasons, and has been with the Crimson Tide longer than any of his competitors.
Simpson is battling another returnee in Austin Mack. Mack is the only quarterback in the group to have previously played under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, back when they were at Washington with head coach Kalen DeBoer.
Finally, five-star freshman Keelon Russell is in contention. He was named Elite 11 MVP before arriving in Tuscaloosa.
“Each of them, they’ve been really good,” Bernard said. “They made a big jump from the spring until now. Our playbook is something that’s very diligent, it’s not easy to pick up, but those guys put in a lot of time. They’re here early. Each of them, they have their own way of going about things, and I’m just very grateful to have a relationship with each and every one of them.
