Tottenham have triggered an option to extend forward Son Heung-min’s contract by a year, until the summer of 2026.
The South Korea forward and club captain’s deal was due to expire in June, meaning Spurs were at risk of losing him on a free transfer at the end of a decade-long spell in north London since signing from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
Barcelona were one of a number of clubs rumoured to be looking at signing him this summer, but the 32-year-old will now remain at Tottenham for at least another year.
Son has long-since been the top-scoring Asian player in Premier League history and is the third-top scorer of players still active in the competition, behind only Jamie Vardy and Mo Salah.
He has reached double figures in the top flight in each of the last eight seasons and shared the Golden Boot with Salah in 2022, but has found form harder to come by during this campaign, netting only five goals so far and two in his last 11 Premier League appearances.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou also expressed his delight at the news, telling press ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg tie against Liverpool that the aim is to ensure Son wins a trophy at Spurs.
“He’s already had an outstanding career at this football club,” Postecoglou said.
“He’s played a big role in the last ten years, making an impact at the club and in the Premier League. It’s great to extend his stay. The aim and ambition is to make sure he finishes his Tottenham career with some silverware.
Son is one of the most popular players in the dressing room. He’s club captain. The club believe he’s still got so much to offer.
The 32-year-old joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances for the club.
The South Korea international has 125 goals and 68 assists in 320 Premier League outings.

Son was part of a Tottenham side that reached the club’s first Champions League final in 2019, which Spurs lost to Liverpool, but he is yet to win a trophy with the club.
The north London side have made the announcement about his contract extension prior to the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at home to Liverpool on Wednesday.
Spurs are 12th in the Premier League this season, with Son scoring five goals and registering six assists in 17 top-flight appearances.
