The New York Liberty claimed an emphatic 104-68 victory over the Indiana Fever in what was a career low-point for Fever star Caitlin Clark.
The 22-year-old endured a torrid evening after amassing three points across the entire game – her lowest field goal rate (10%) across her WNBA and college careers.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Jonquel Jones were the stars of the show for Liberty after amassing 20 and 18 points respectively, as Clark was withdrawn from proceedings at the start of the fourth quarter.
Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu explained the importance of stopping “the head of the monster” Clark in their pursuit of victory.
“I think collectively, as a team, we understand who kind of the head of the monster is on that team, and we are trying to just make everything tough and difficult,” said Ionescu in quotes published by ESPN and Associated Press.
“Obviously, they came off a back-to-back [two games in two days], so it’s a little bit tough for them, as well.
But she’ll figure it out. It’s not that big of a deal to have a game like that.”
This result came a day after Fever edged out The Chicago Sky with a 71-70 win on Saturday, with Aliyah Boston forced off with an ankle injury.
Indiana coach Christie Sides gave an update on Boston and her thoughts on what has been a punishing schedule for the team.
“Their legs were shot,” she explained.
“I mean, that’s where everything stems from, your legs, when you shoot the basketball — especially for 3s.
