SAD NEWS: San Francisco Giants announced that third baseman Matt Chapman is leaving today due to significant affairs in the team….
Opening Day on Friday and the whole first regular-season weekend will be anchored by a devoted Dodgers fan as the public address announcer for the San Francisco Giants.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports that C.J. Silas will start at home plate for the entire three-game series against the Padres. Last week, she called the Giants’ exhibition game versus the A’s as the PA announcer. At the time of writing, the Giants had not responded to a confirmation request from SFGATE.
The Giants claim they would employ “several” candidates, the first of whom is Silas, in their search to succeed Renel Brooks-Moon, the PA announcer for Oracle Park’s first 24 seasons. Although the Giants and the announcer had “mutually and amicably” parted ways, according to the team’s announcement that Brooks-Moon would not be returning to the booth, some sources suggested that the Bay Area native Brooks-Moon had wished to remain on the show after her contract expired in December of last year.
In addition to hosting a weekly chat show in San Luis Obispo for a number of years, Silas has 22 years of experience as the public address announcer at Cal Poly. According to the SLO Tribune, she had previously applied for a number of MLB stadium announcer positions, including finalist positions with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
“I’m not thinking about auditioning; I’m just going to be that stadium’s best announcer when I’m there,” Silas stated to the SLO Tribune. “I don’t have any queries. All I’m doing is taking pleasure in the possibility of realizing this goal. And I’ll be one step closer to doing this for other clubs if the Giants aren’t the team that selects me. However, this is the first time I will formally reveal a A regular-season Major League Baseball game.
“Right now, I’m getting ready for opening weekend in one of the most exquisite Major League Baseball stadiums in the nation,” she continued.
Silas praised Brooks-Moon in a statement she wrote on Instagram the day after announcing last week’s exhibition game.
“I am ecstatic and appreciative of the team for helping me develop my career, but I cannot express how much I respect Renel Brooks-Moon without acknowledging my feelings,” Silas wrote in his article. Renel is a bright light and a cornerstone in the community, and her contributions to the sports world are undeniable. I appreciate Renel and her endless hours of work toward creating opportunities for women in sports, just like many other members of the San Francisco Giants community do.
