Michigan won its third straight Big Ten Championship Game, beating Iowa 36-0 on Dec. 2 and was awarded the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff a day later.

The Wolverines will meet No. 4 Alabama in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, with the winner advancing to the National Championship Game on Jan. 8 at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Wolverines will be making their third straight appearance in the College Football Playoff but first as the No. 1 seed.

They lost in the semifinals as No. 2 seeds in each of the last two years.

This will be Alabama’s eighth appearance since the playoff format was established in 2015.

The Tide have won three titles in that timeframe.

Michigan is just 1-6 in bowls under Harbaugh, while Alabama is 6-1 in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Michigan finished as the regular season No. 1 in the country at scoring defense (9.46 ppg) and is trying to become the first team to finish the season allowing less than 10 points per game since the 2011 Crimson Tide.

However, the Alabama defense had two players – linebacker Dallas Turner and corner Kool-Aid McKinstry – selected to the the USA TODAY Sports college football All-America First Team.

Safety Will Johnson made the second team for the Wolverines.

Most of the early money on this game has gone in Alabama’s direction as the spread opened at Michigan -2.5 and was down to Michigan -1 a few days later.

If Michigan remains the favorite, it would be the first time in 77 games that Alabama was an underdog against a non-SEC team it would only be the second time in Nick Saban’s 235 game coaching career at Alabama that the Tide were underdogs in consecutive games.
