Javonte Green will be back in a Chicago Bulls uniform, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski
The former fan-favorite is reportedly signing with the team on a 10-day contract. He’s spent this past season with the Golden State Warriors G-League affiliate, averaging 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds over just 10 games played.
The Chicago Bulls opted not to re-sign Green after he struggled with a knee injury last year. A mid-season surgery played a role in keeping him to just 32 total games.
The Chicago Bulls acquired Javonte Green from the Boston Celtics as part of a multi-team deal during the 2020-21 season. He went on to appear in 113 games for the franchise, which included 46 starts. While he only averaged 6.0 points and 3.6 rebounds during his time with the team, he proved to be an important and versatile part of the team’s rotation.
Green was the kind of dirty-work role player who crashed the offensive glass, dove on the ground for loose balls, and rose for highlight jams in transition. Also, despite standing just six-foot-four, Green proved capable of guarding positions 1-4. He finished his Bulls tenure with a 1.3 Defensive Estimated Plus-Minus.
Considering the Chicago Bulls roster sits at a full 15, this will likely be a 10-day deal under an injury hardship exception. If I understand how that all works correctly, four players must be unavailable for a team to pull out this contract. The Bulls check that box with Zach LaVine, Patrick Williams, Lonzo Ball, and Julian Phillips currently sidelined with injuries. Phillips is the only injury that hasn’t been deemed season-ending, but he’ll clearly remain out for a little longer.
If I had to guess, we’ll see Green on the floor at some point over the next few games. Even if he doesn’t finish out the year with the team, his experience playing alongside many members of this roster should allow for him to slide right in (continuity!). Not to mention, we know Billy Donovan trusts him.
