Multiple teams have reportedly expressed interested in Jonathan India.
The Reds could also trade a veteran relief pitcher. It would even more sense after they acquired Jakob Junis in the Montas deal.
The Reds are 51-55 on the season. They’re five games out in the National League Wild Card race and 10 games behind the Brewers in the division.
It’s a sellers market right now, which should give Nick Krall and the rest of the front office a chance to get more than expected in another trade or two between now and the deadline.
When the Cincinnati Reds signed starting pitcher Frankie Montas in the offseason, the front office had a plan for his fit with the team.
If the Reds were contenders, he had the ability to pitch near the top of their rotation.
If they were out of it, they could flip him in a trade. On Monday, the Reds, who are five games back in the wild card race, dealt Montas to the Milwaukee Brewers. He’ll have the ability to help get a division rival who’s leading the division into the postseason.
In return, the Reds got former Cincinnati Bearcats outfielder Joey Wiemer, who could be a factor in the Reds’ outfield immediately, and veteran reliever Jakob Junis.
“This team helped me a lot,” Montas said after he got traded.
“This is probably the toughest time I’ve had leaving a clubhouse. I’ve been traded many times.
The relationships I’ve built here and the way they welcomed me and my family and kids, it’s definitely tough.”
Montas reestablished his value with the Reds this year. He signed a prove-it deal after having shoulder surgery and missing nearly the entire 2023 season with the New York Yankees.
Montas has mostly stayed healthy with the Reds this year, has posted 93 1/3 innings and has a 5.01 ERA and a 4-8 record.
