Michael Jordan, often celebrated as a giant in the world of basketball, is making waves beyond the court as a co-owner of the 23XI Racing team in NASCAR.

This unexpected venture into the world of motorsport can largely be attributed to his close relationships with NASCAR star Denny Hamlin and former NBA player Brad Daugherty.

Denny Hamlin, a long-time friend and racing enthusiast, played a pivotal role in piquing Jordan’s interest in NASCAR.

However, Brad Daugherty, a successful former Cleveland Cavaliers player, passionately asserts that he played a significant role in guiding Jordan into the racing community.

Daugherty has been entrenched in the NASCAR scene since 2008, owning a team and boasting deep roots in the motorsport industry thanks to his family background in drag racing. Reflecting on his journey in racing, Daugherty remarked.

“Yeah, my family has been around racing my whole life. My uncles, my father, everybody — they were drag racers.

So I grew up around race cars… I’ve been in the NASCAR space for about 30 years and have owned a team for about 20-25 years.

It’s a lot of fun; I love hot rods, and I dragged Michael into this space now, so he’s racing with us.”

Daugherty and Jordan share a long history that traces back to their time at the University of North Carolina, where friends revealed Jordan’s burgeoning curiosity about NASCAR, despite initially teasing Daugherty about his passion for the sport.

Daugherty reminisced fondly: “Michael gave me a hard time about being a hillbilly.

But you know what? He would also sit there and watch with me. He liked it. He always did.”

Jordan’s foray into NASCAR began in 2021 when he co-founded 23XI Racing with Denny Hamlin
