It’s barely Week 2 of the 2023 season, and we’re already seeing shades of last season.
The Chargers have ruled star running back Austin Ekeler out for tomorrow’s AFC showdown with the Tennessee Titans.
Ekeler has been dealing with an ankle issue since the late fourth quarter of the Miami game. He was out for the last offensive series and will be out for 60 minutes for Sunday’s contest.
The 28-year-old seemed bullish about his status in interviews this past weekend and addressed he’s played through ankle problems in the past, but it seemed like he couldn’t withstand another beating a week later.
Maybe this is just the Chargers being cautious, and you would hope so. The offense changes in a big way without their star in the backfield, which means others need to step up, including backup running back Joshua Kelley and now second-year back Isaiah Spiller.
It’s a must-win as far as I’m concerned, and we’ll see how that side of the ball looks without their dynamic back.
Los Angeles Chargers safety Alohi Gilman was able to once again make an outsized impact for his Bolts during LA’s critical 27-6 leveling of the New York Jets Monday night. He recorded four total tackles, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble.
The 5’10”, 201-pound Notre Dame product, 26, has recorded 19 solo tackles when he’s been healthy this season. He explained the oft-maligned LA defense’s ethos at MetLife Stadium last night, per Omar Navarro of Chargers.com
Gilman was suiting up for just his second game since LA’s 28-24 defeat of the Minnesota Vikings in September.
Los Angeles (4-4) will get an opportunity to actually improve above a .500 record for the first time this season on Sunday night, when it faces the formidable 6-2 Detroit Lions.
