The boos seemed to rain down on Derek Carr until Lions defensive tackle Bruce Irvin crashed down hard on top of the the Saints quarterback with a little more than 10 minutes to go in New Orleans’ 33-28 loss to Detroit on Sunday.
For the third time in his 10th NFL season and first with the Saints, Carr had to leave a game with upper-body injuries, concussion symptoms or both.
“I can’t imagine the mental battles that he’s going through,” said Saints left guard James Hurst, referring both the fans’ treatment of Carr and the toll the game has taken on the 32-year-old QB’s body this season.
“We know what type of person he is. And as a teammate, we love him and we’re going to fight for him.
Okwara, Buggs and Onwuzurike are healthy scratches, and are likely sitting as a direct result of the Lions elevating Irvin and Bohanna.
The Lions appear to be exploring their depth options on defense, and with Bohanna using his third and final elevation this week, it’s possible that there may be some roster moves coming soon.
For the third week in a row, a very healthy Lions roster squeezes out rookies Martin, Green, and Gilmore.
The Lions (9-3) have started eight different offensive line combinations in 12 games this season and got starting left guard Jonah Jackson back in the lineup Sunday after a two-game absence due to a wrist injury.
Jackson also has missed three games this season with a high ankle sprain, left tackle Taylor Decker has missed two games with a high ankle sprain, Ragnow missed one game with a calf injury and guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai and swing tackle Matt Nelson are out for the season with injuries.
“I won’t know will tomorrow,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said.
“I mean at first coming off, it sounded like one thing and then after the fact it sounded like something maybe a little bit different.
So one was not as good, one sounds more positive so I won’t know till tomorrow.”
Campbell said he was more hopeful after the game that Ragnow avoided serious injury than he was when Ragnow limped off the field and directly to a cart that took him to the locker room.
