Ruiz appeared in 38 games (one start) between the White Sox and the D-backs last season, tossing a 5.89 ERA over 44 1/3 innings before he was outrighted to Triple-A on July 30.
Ruiz struggled in August at Triple-A Reno (a 6.28 ERA between four starts and four relief appearances) before rebounding with a sub-2.00 ERA in September, once he was strictly used in a relief capacity (1.50 over nine appearances).
The Phillies agreed to terms on one-year contracts with Cave, Covey and Stubbs before the 8 p.m. ET tender deadline. They also tendered contracts to five other salary arbitration-eligible players: infielder Alec Bohm, right-hander Jeff Hoffman, infielder Edmundo Sosa, left-hander Gregory Soto and left-hander Ranger Suárez.
The Phillies did not tender a contract to left-hander Josh Fleming, whom the team claimed off waivers on Nov. 6.
Painter had Tommy John surgery with ulnar nerve transposition surgery on July 25 in Los Angeles. Orthopedist Neal ElAttrache performed the procedures. The typical timeline to return to play is 15 to 18 months.
Painter will miss the entire 2024 season, according to the Phillies. They first tried a conservative rehab process, following the opinions of their doctors and ElAttrache, who works closely with Painter’s agent Scott Boras.
“I know we’ll be looking at [Painter] and thinking in 2025 that he has a chance to be in our rotation at that time,” president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. “But that’s a long time away.” (Last updated: Nov. 3).
