NEW DELHI: Dubbed as Philly Rob or Topper, Rob Thomson will continue to lead the Philadelphia Phillies as their manager for at least two more seasons, with a one-year contract extension through 2025.
Despite initially serving as an interim manager in 2022, Thomson has proven his worth with a 155-118 record since taking over from Joe Girardi. He guided the Phillies to two consecutive NL Championship Series, including a 2022 World Series appearance.
Reflecting on the contract extension, Thomson expressed, “It’s good to know that you’ve got that extra year, but if I didn’t get it, it probably wouldn’t have bothered me.”
Under Thomson’s leadership, the Phillies achieved a 90-72 record in 2023, marking their first 90-win season since 2011.
Despite falling short in the recentNLCS against Arizona, Thomson remains optimistic about the team’s future.
Thomson, aged 60, had initially contemplated retirement after the 2022 season but found renewed enthusiasm in the managerial role.
He emphasized the dynamic challenges and the absence of staleness in his current position, affirming his love for the team, players, coaches, organization, and the city.
With key players like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner, along with ace Aaron Nola‘s recent contract extension, the Phillies aim to contend for the World Series.
Phillies President Dave Dombrowski expressed confidence in Thomson, stating, “You know what? I can’t wait,” regarding the prospect of winning a World Series under Thomson’s leadership.
Thomson, who spent 28 years with the New York Yankees organization before joining the Phillies in 2018, remains upbeat and committed to the team’s success.
