Tennessee Head Football Coach Josh Heupel has joined the federal lawsuit against the NCAA challenging the ban on name, image, and likeness compensation during recruitment of college athletes.

Heupel filed a declaration on Friday in support of the lawsuit filed by Tennessee and Virginia last month.

It echoes a declaration filed by Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White in asserting that the NCAA’s NIL-recruiting rules harm prospective and current students athletes.

The fourth-year Tennessee coach contends that the ban on discussing NIL deals with recruits denies the athletes all the necessary information to make one of the most important decisions of their lives in deciding what school to attend.

He wrote that the consequences of choosing the wrong school may never be fully reversed and can negatively impact the happiness, mental health, personal development and professional future of athletes

“Because selecting the right school is so important, when a recruit goes to a school that is not the best fit, they may end up being deprived of personal or professional opportunities that they will never be able to go back and recreate.”

As a coach who has worked at schools that have been under NCAA investigation, Heupel said even the possibility of NCAA punishments can lead athletes to school attend another school that may not be fit for them or the program.
