TUSCALOOSA, Alabama: Over the weekend in the Crimson Classic, Alabama softball had its first loss of the year, but it also secured its first two ranking victories.

The Crimson Tide’s pitching staff put on another strong performance despite the offense’s struggles over the entire weekend. This Saturday, Alabama hosts Florida at home to begin SEC play.

Will Kalen DeBoer need to meet any expectations in his first spring at Alabama?

The offense is led by Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in Kalen DeBoer’s first spring practice.
Everyone will start over with a new coaching staff at Alabama, but the squad needed a leader from the start.

Monday firmly established that Tuscaloosa is entering a new age, in case you hadn’t guessed by now. For the first time since spring training began, the Alabama Crimson Tide football team took to the practice field. As Kalen DeBoer takes the helm as the Crimson Tide head coach, the practice was directed by a new person for the first time in 17 seasons.

With DeBoer’s hiring, the Capstone’s coaching staff is nearly totally new—just two coaches from Nick Saban’s former team were kept on. Everyone has a fresh start and an opportunity to play when there are new coaches, which means there are more chances to make an impression.

Yes, I’m not sure if I really put it that way, but the others—you guys aren’t you collecting data every day? I’m learning more about them. They’re learning about the staff and me. “I know those initial impressions matter to those guys because they’re competing and making plays today,” DeBoer remarked on Monday. “The intensity was high and I would expect it to be that as they, as you said, have kind of a new slate and everyone’s starting from the same point.”

To join him at the Capstone, DeBoer had a number of his Washington Huskies players move from Seattle to Tuscaloosa; one in particular raised a lot of issues.

Could the entrance of quarterback Austin Mack be a sign of unease regarding Jalen Milroe, the current starting quarterback?

“You do want competition, don’t you? There will always be competitors. Jalen was the one who had to perform the initial reps with the ones when we lined up today, as we called them,” stated DeBoer. Like the other players who took those initial reps, he is giving it everything he has. I completely anticipate that the guys who are truly hungry will push the ones who are in front of them to perform at their highest level. That’s what you’re after.
