MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia University held its International Street Festival on High Street in downtown Morgantown on Sunday to celebrate diversity and culture.

The event was organized by WVU Global Affairs, the WVU Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the City of Morgantown and Main Street Morgantown.

Those in attendance could partake in the festival through different foods, music and dance.

Entertainment included a Japanese sword dancer, the WVU Brazilian Ensemble, Chinese music and dance, the Latin band SabraSon and even a fashion show.

The Westwood Middle School Panhandlers and the Brookhaven Elementary Appalachian Music Ensemble also performed for attendees.

Program coordinator for the Office of Global Affairs at WVU Becky Mcdaniel discussed her love for the festival.

“This is a way to allow the international student population to share their cultures and their home countries with the Morgantown community since there is such a wide variety of diverse cultures here in Morgantown,” she said.

It’s expected that over the next three weeks, the Ad Hoc Governance Committee will work with those groups and start on creating a list of nominees.

The committee will then make a recommendation to the full Board for endorsement.

“A key priority of this Board and a critical part of the process will be soliciting input from stakeholders,” Harris said.

“To that end, we are planning on-campus and statewide listening sessions, virtual and in-person, with key stakeholders.

In addition to these listening sessions, there will also be an online survey that will further facilitate input from an even broader audience.”
