Unfinished Business: The Reasons Why Trading Lauri Markkanen Is Probably Not a Good Idea
The Big Finn is an essential component of a contender in the future.
In a previous episode of Family Guy, Peter and Lois Griffin are subjected to a dubious timeshare salesman’s presentation during which he offers them a boat as payment for their time. Peter responds, “Well look, slick, we’re not gonna buy your lousy timeshare, alright? “, not falling for the salesman’s remarks. Where is my boat now?
While acknowledging that Peter might own the boat, the salesman points him that he also has the option to select the “Mystery Box.” Peter responds, “Not so fast, Lois,” to Lois’s urging to board the boat. A boat is a boat. However, anything may be in the mystery package! Perhaps it’s even a boat! You are aware of our intense desire for one of those!
As expected, Peter grabs the box.
… rather than getting a new boat, he and Lois drive home with three comedy club tickets.
From an impartial vantage point, it’s simple to imagine wild fantasies about this or that team trading their best player for two things: a ton of draft picks or another superstar.
Based on team needs, a general manager would probably select one of the following players over Lauri (#7) if the 2017 NBA draft were to be redone: Donovan Mitchell (#13), Bam Adebayo (#14), Jayson Tatum (#3), and De’Aaron Fox (#5).
But there are Markelle Fultz, (#1) Lonzo Ball, (#2) Josh Jackson, (#4), and Jonathan Isaac (#6) for every Lauri Markkanen, Jayson Tatum, De’Aaron Fox, Donovan Mitchell, and Bam Adebayo.
The Jazz have plenty of draft capital already. In an attempt to select a player of Markkanen’s caliber, teams hoard draft cash. Lauri says she feels at ease here, which is hard enough to find in a star. At seven feet, he is capable of producing his own long- and mid-range shots. And possibly even more
Most essential, we are aware of his identity and abilities.
The player in question might be anyone. Armchair GM Peter Griffin speculates that it might even be someone similar to Lauri Markkanen. No, the Jazz should keep Lauri instead of trading him in order to have the opportunity to pick a player who might be just as talented as he is.
In certain circles of Jazz, there is a popular belief that Lauri should be traded for a different star, like Kevin Durant or maybe Luka Doncic. As much as I detest mystery boxes, the issue here is that, in order for teams other than the Los Angeles Lakers to compete, they actually need to hit at least a few of them. In addition to the boat, any potential trading partner will also need a few high-end mystery boxes.
Would you swap a boat for a few mystery boxes that might also be boats in exchange for a single, marginally better boat? Most likely not. The Jazz must be very careful about which picks they trade and for whom in order to properly build. A group that included Lauri as
It’s improbable that the top choice will take home the NBA title. However, a club that had him as their #2 option may be quite risky. The draft is most likely your greatest chance of finding that guy.
So, when and to whom should they relocate? That is worthy of its own piece, but for now let me just add that, whatever schemes Danny Ainge may have, very few of them should involve dealing our all-star player.
