The Detroit Lions are very close to a talented pass rusher returning to practice.

Appearing on his 97.1 The Ticket weekly radio interview, Dan Campbell expressed there was a “good chance” James Houston would start his 21-day practice window this week.

Houston, 25, suffered a broken fibula in a Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field.

“I’m probably on the last quarter of the rehab and so yeah, it’s probably a really important quarter for me just to kind of make sure everything is right, mentally, physically, and I get the checks and clears from everybody,” Houston told reporters a few weeks ago.

“There’s nothing really I can’t do, it’s just the process of how these things mature.”

Detroit’s third year head coach indicated veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson is also close to returning to action, even as soon as this week on the road against the Dallas Cowboys.

“I would tell you they’re all improving,” Campbell noted. “It’s really about — like today’s a walkthrough.

They’re going to get some work this morning.

Move around. We’ll see where they’re at. Look, C.J.’s close.

He is close, but we got to decide what we’re going to do there and just how close is close.

Other guys are improving. There’s a good chance we start Houston’s clock.

And there again, Mack (Alim McNeill) continues to get better.

But, this is going to be one of those that it’s going to take a few days here to decide exactly where we’re at.”
