The midfielder, who collated 34 trophies for his club and country over his career, was unable to reach his dream of lifting European silverware.

However, he remains set in his decision to retire and has issued a statement thanking those that have supported him.

Taking to Instagram, he said: “So that’s it. But before I take a break and at least try to realise what happened over the last 17 years, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to say thank you to everyone, accepting me how and who I am.
