The Reds made a strong start to the encounter and took the lead in impressive style on 18 minutes. Thompson showed good strength to win possession high up the field before firing an effort into the top corner from 25 yards.
Forest then doubled their lead six minutes before the break. Josh Powell picked out Ateef Konaté in a central area on the break before threading the ball through for Julian Larsson who found the bottom corner with a composed first-time finish.
Forest continued to dominate before the break and nearly added a third goal through Konaté. Powell’s cross was kept alive by Jack Perkins who found the Frenchman, but his first-time effort was well kept out by the Accrington goalkeeper.
On the hour, Accrington pulled a goal back through Cody Adedoyin, who powerfully headed home a cross from the left to reduce the deficit.
In the first minute of added time, Stanley were then awarded a penalty and a chance to get back on level terms, but Jack Nolan saw his penalty saved with Aaron Bott producing a fine save to his right to keep The Reds in the lead.
The result sees Forest finish Group C in second place, level on points with Stanley who top the group only on goals scored.
The draw for the round of 32 will take place live on Sky Sports News on Friday 24 November at approximately 6:30pm. Stay tuned to nottinghamforest.co.uk for updates.
