The Scot has been dismissed following a concerning slump in form that has seen them fall to within two points of the dropzone after a 1-0 defeat to struggling Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Stoke have confirmed on Sunday evening that Neil has been relieved of his duties, 24 hours after the final whistle at the Bet365 Stadium was met with boos and calls for his dismissal.
Neil has overseen four straight defeats in the Championship – with Stoke taking just 11 points from their last ten matches, the same return as Norwich over that period.
Norwich hired Neil in 2015 from Hamilton Accies, and he led them to Championship promotion via the play-off finals that season.
He was sacked in 2017 after 108 games in charge as a precursor to Stuart Webber and Daniel Farke’s respective arrivals.
He has subsequently managed Preston, Sunderland and Stoke – and finds himself searching for another job.
Ex-Birmingham boss John Eustace is the early favourite to succeed him at the Bet365 Stadium. Paul Gallagher has been placed in caretaker charge.
After the defeat, Neil admitted he didn’t take his position at the club for granted: “Listen, I’m not naïve.
Football is a results game and certainly recent results have been really disappointing because we’ve played teams in and around us, or below us, in the league,” he told Stoke Live.
That is not my decision to make so I don’t make any assumptions. John has been very good to me since I’ve been here and he doesn’t owe me anything. What I can guarantee him, if it means anything, is that I’ll give my utmost to keep going and try to get us up the table.”
Neil is the 10th managerial sacking of the season, following Sunderland’s dismissal of Tony Mowbray and Swansea’s decision to dispense with Michael Duff.
Norwich travel to Staffordshire to face Stoke in March, having beaten them 1-0 at Carrow Road in September.
